Almond blossom in Mallorca

Book a hotel in the middle of the almond blossom

The almond blossom on Mallorca is a natural spectacle that attracts many holidaymakers to the popular holiday island year after year. When thousands of almond trees transform the Balearic island into a delicately fragrant sea of pink and white blossoms, it is the perfect time of year to explore Mallorca on your own or to enjoy the blossoming nature and mild temperatures on hikes and bike tours.

Spring fever instead of winter blues

While it is crisply cold in our latitudes, the so-called "little summer" begins in Mallorca in the first two weeks of January. During this time, the thermometer climbs to pleasant temperatures of 16-20 degrees, heralding the start of the almond blossom on Mallorca. Little by little, the trees open their buds and immerse the land in a true flowering splendour. There are said to be seven million almond trees on the holiday island - you can imagine the splendour that results.

There are two main types of almond on Mallorca. The pink-blossoming bitter almond and the sweet almond with its delicate white blossoms. Everywhere on the island you can admire the almond trees from mid-January to around the end of February.

Stay in a finca hotel

In the lowlands, for example in the southeast, the almond blossom begins. Here, especially in the regions around Cala Figuera or Colonia Sant Jordi, you can admire particularly impressive almond plantations. The almond also plays an important role in many Fincahotels on Mallorca as it became an important source of income at the end of the 19th century, after the phylloxera plague brought wine cultivation to a temporary standstill. At the Rural hotel Sa Galera in the southeast near Cas Concos, more than 5,000 almond trees bathe the land around the charming finca hotel in a magnificent sea of blossoms. The ideal opportunity for numerous beautiful photo motifs! The cosy country hotel in the south-east of Mallorca has 20 comfortable rooms for its guests. A restaurant is also part of the hotel in the south of Mallorca.

In the southwest, between Palma and Andratx and towards the mountains on the way to Valldemossa, there is also a real splendour of almond orchards. Towards the mountains, the almond blossom starts a little later. The ideal time for a trip to Mallorca during the almond blossom season is therefore the beginning of February. This is when you have the best chance of experiencing both types of almond. Around the country hotel Alqueria Blanca in the west in the municipality of Bunyola, the cultivation of almonds is an important part of agriculture. Many thousands of trees surround the small country hotel at the foot of the Tramuntana. Forays through the blossoming nature, into the mountains but also to Palma are no problem from here and guarantee a varied holiday and the best opportunities to explore the versatile island.

Experience Mallorca

Do you know the "Red Lightning" - Mallorca's famous historic tram that connects Palma with Sóller? If you are in Mallorca at the time of the almond blossom, you should not miss a ride on the traditional railway. Passing beautiful nature, impressive mountains and, of course, thousands and thousands of almond trees, you can enjoy Mallorca's almond blossom in a very cosy way. This can also be combined with a visit to the island's capital Palma, for example, as the railway starts here. For those who prefer a shorter journey on the Red Lightning, we recommend getting on in Bunyola, as this is where the more charming part of the route begins.

If you are drawn to the mountains, we recommend the country hotel Sa Vall Valldemossa in the famous village of Valldemossa. From here you can enjoy an enchanting view over the landscape and even explore the romantic town of Valldemossa on foot, walking or strolling in beautiful nature among almond and olive trees. While Valldemossa is crowded with tourists in the summer, it is very quiet in the low season.

What we particularly like: Golf courses, Palma, Port de Sóller as well as charming mountain villages such as Valldemossa and Deià are within easy reach and offer numerous possibilities for varied leisure activities.

At the end of February, the first leaves appear between the almond blossoms and herald a new phase of spring. In late summer, the almonds can be harvested. On Mallorca, the almond is used, for example, for the famous almond cake Gató or also as the perfume "Flor d'Ametler". In addition, the almond is also used for delicious ice cream and other desserts such as the Christmas speciality turrón.

The Finca hotel Na Set Centes in the east of Mallorca also serves many local products at breakfast and dinner. You can taste Mallorca while you relax over dinner from eventful excursions, for example to nearby Artà, and let the experience sink in. Surrounded by peaceful nature and with a view of the almond fields, the day begins in fine weather on the cosy sun terrace. Berta and Juan lovingly look after their guests - always trying to show them the real Mallorca.

What we particularly like: The historic farmhouse is still very original and lets you immerse yourself in a time when the clocks ticked more slowly. An ideal place to escape the stress and hectic pace of our modern times.

We have one last tip just outside Palma: the country hotel Son Caulelles. Thanks to its good connections, you can quickly go shopping or sightseeing in the island's metropolis. But an excursion to the mountains or the sea is also quickly possible from here. After an eventful day, you can enjoy the sweet idleness in the beautifully landscaped garden of Son Caulelles between the tall palm trees.

What we particularly like: While it is very quiet in the tourist metropolises in winter on Mallorca and many things are closed, life in the interior of the island is quite normal. This means that in the neighbourhood of Son Caulelles there are open shops and restaurants for a varied holiday. A visit to the neighbouring pottery village of Portol is also a good idea to learn a little more about the island.
